Old statements often resurface to challenge public figures, and J.D. Vance, a prominent supporter of Donald Trump, is facing scrutiny for past controversial remarks. As Trump campaigns again for the Republican presidential nomination, Vance’s 2021 comments have gained renewed attention.
In a 2021 Fox News interview, Vance made derogatory remarks about women without children, using the pejorative term “cat ladies” to describe them. He argued that women without children are inherently unfit to govern, stating, “In this country, we are being ruled by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable in their lives.” Vance further criticized prominent Democrats such as Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, asserting that the future of the Democratic Party is controlled by individuals without children. This assertion was factually incorrect, as Kamala Harris has raised her stepchildren.
Vance’s comments sparked significant backlash when they were first made, and the controversy has resurfaced as Trump seeks re-election. The comments were widely condemned, with notable figures speaking out against Vance’s views.
Actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg was among the first to respond, criticizing Vance for his disregard of personal choices and circumstances. Goldberg remarked, “Sir, there are people who have chosen not to have children, for whatever reason. There are people who want to have children but can’t. How dare you?”
Jennifer Aniston also weighed in on Vance’s remarks via Instagram. She shared a video of Vance’s comments and added her own critique, stating, “Mr. Vance, I pray that his daughter is lucky enough to have children of her own someday.” Aniston further criticized Vance’s position on reproductive rights, expressing concern that his views might impact access to options like IVF, adding, “I hope she doesn’t have to resort to IVF as a second option. Because you’re also trying to take that away from her.”
The backlash against Vance’s statements underscores ongoing debates about family, gender roles, and societal expectations. These discussions continue to shape public discourse and highlight the complexities surrounding personal choices and political leadership.
