Elena Rybakina is poised to withdraw from the Canadian Open, scheduled to start on August 6, and her immediate tennis future remains uncertain following her recent withdrawal from the Olympic Games. The former Wimbledon champion has been dealing with significant health issues, which have disrupted her competitive schedule.
Earlier this week, Rybakina shared a video explaining her recent troubles. She revealed that she had suffered a slip, accompanied by a high fever and breathing difficulties, which led to her decision to withdraw from the Olympics. Her absence from Paris raised concerns about her ability to compete, especially given her history of health setbacks.
In her video, translated from Russian, Rybakina expressed her deep regret over missing the Olympic Games. She mentioned, “I trained actively with the team, but unfortunately, I slipped right before the tournament began. I experienced a high fever and had trouble breathing, and the doctors strictly forbade me from stepping onto the court. I want to apologize to all Kazakh fans for not meeting your expectations. This situation has deeply affected me because I worked hard with my team to achieve great results, and I was eager to win a medal.”
Rybakina also reflected on her near-miss in Tokyo, where she was close to securing a medal. She emphasized that winning an Olympic medal remains a major goal and expressed her hope to return to the court soon. “I am grateful to all my compatriots for their unwavering support. It’s always uplifting to see our blue flag in stadiums around the world.”
Further updates about her condition indicate that Rybakina has been receiving medical care in Vienna. According to the vice president of the Kazakh Tennis Federation, she is currently in Bratislava recovering from bronchitis, following consultations with specialists at the Dobling Clinic in Vienna. Although Rybakina is reportedly feeling better, she remains weak and her recovery process is ongoing.
This situation puts her participation in the Canadian Open, as well as potentially the Cincinnati tournament, in jeopardy. She needs to defend semi-final points from Toronto, and with her current health status, her plans for the US Open are also in doubt.
The Kazakh Tennis Federation confirmed Rybakina’s withdrawal from Toronto and noted that her next tournament is uncertain at this point. For more detailed updates on her condition and recovery, you can refer to the interview published by KTF.
